M A R I E   M A R T I N E  is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, and emerging filmmaker based in Montreal, Canada. She was the recipient of the prestigious SSHRC Vanier fellowship for her sociological studies. Her visual essays combine narrative nonfiction, literary criticism, and genuinely crafted art books (photography + mixed media).

Her current pipeline includes Street Stills 2013-2023 or the Death of Allie Mae Burroughs, a hybrid book + art show about women and disappearance that takes the intersection of photography and violence as its subject, as well as Portée Disparue: The Many Lives of Michèle Lalonde, her documentary film debut.

I am a multidisciplinary artist and a creative writer operating at the intersection of rigorous sociological research and high-impact visual culture. A former Vanier Scholar in Sociology/Cultural Studies, I trained at NYU’s Institute for Public Knowledge. I spent the last decade mastering the art of the forensic search—from deep dives into institutional archives to the unscripted reality of city streets.

Drawing from my own experience of disappearance, poverty, and coercive control, my work berths at the intersection of art and the many guises of violence—known or unknown, visible and invisible—in contemporary societies.

I am the founder of ART AGAINST THE MACHINE ©, a production house dedicated to combating hatred through high-impact narratives—storytelling for a word-wild world. I am particularly interested in developing high-impact documentaries and TV series in which character development intertwines with the (re)-writing of history.
